Answer	:	Yes, all the Ameda products we carry are BPA free. Items that were originally made of polycarbonate plastic have been replaced with either polypropylene or polyethersulfone.

Question	:	I have an older Ameda Purely Yours breast pump (2003?). Still works great. Do the old bottles and horns contain BPA?
Answer	:	Your breast pump will more than likely contain BPA. If the breast shields and bottles are clear they will have BPA; if they have a frosted look to them they will not contain BPA.

Question	:	What parts can I wash in the dishwasher?
Answer	:	Keeping your Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump clean and in good working order is important to the health of your baby and the life of your pump. Since cleaning your pump can take time, we have tips that can make the process easier and faster. No Tubing Care Required – Since each Ameda breast pump has a solid diaphragm barrier between the breast flange and the tubing, air exchange between these pieces is prevented. With this solid barrier in place, you do not need to clean the tubing or worry about moisture or contamination in the pump’s tubing. Pump Sterilization – If your pump kit package is not marked "sterile," place all the pieces that come into contact with milk in a pot, cover them with water, and boil for 20 minutes before using the pump. After this initial sterilization you should not have to boil any parts again, unless your doctor or hospital has told you otherwise. Everyday Cleaning – After every use, you should wash all pump pieces that come in contact with milk in hot, soapy water (using mild detergent), rinse with clear, hot water, and air dry. You may also choose clean large pump parts, such as the breast flanges and bottles, in the dishwasher. It is best to avoid using abrasive products, chemicals, antibacterial soaps or bottle brushes which can scratch or crack pump parts. To clean a pump motor or bag, just wipe it with a clean, damp cloth. This is also a good way to clean the outside of your pump tubing if milk drips onto it.

Question	:	Besides THIS KIT and a few extra bottles, is there anything else I need to purchase? I have the Ameda Purely Yours dual pump but NO OTHER parts.
Answer	:	The Ameda Dual HygieniKit contains all the parts that are needed to pump with an Ameda Purely Yours pump. Additional storage bottles or freezer bags will be needed to store expressed milk.

Question	:	I have a friend that purchased an Ameda Purely Yours about 4 months ago. She has decided to stop pumping and has offered me her pump. If I purchase a new HygieniKit, is it safe to use her pump? I consulted my hospital's Lactation Center and they say that even though Ameda claims no cross-contamination, the Purely Yours has not been approved by the FDA for multi-users? What is your take? Answer	:	We recommend that you purchase your own breast pump. The FDA considers all breast pumps that are available for consumer purchase as personal hygiene items intended for a single user. Because of this labeling, used breast pumps cannot be sold legally in the United States. Confusion of whether or not it is safe to share breast pumps generally occurs because mothers are aware that pumps can be purchased and rented. However, hospital rentals are safely used by multiple women because they are designed with special barriers that prevent cross contamination. Although most breast pumps are protected from defects by a one year manufacturer’s warranty, these warranties are voided if the pump is used by anyone other than the original user.

Answer	:	No, the Medela makes their own collection kit, the HygieniKit is made only for the Ameda Pumps.

Invest in One or More of These Kits If You Use An Ameda PumpReview by Marquitta

Breastfeeding is challenging enough without having to add more logistical issues. Save yourself some added stress and work by investing in one or more of these Hygienikits if you breastfeed and must pump full-time.

What is a Hygienikit?
I believe all Ameda pumps (and at least 2 of them: the Purely Yours and the Manual Hand Pump) can use components of the Hygienikit. The Hygienikit is the milk collection system itself and includes everything you need except for the pump:

- 2 Horns (the Plastic apparatus that go directly over your breasts and screw onto the bottles/collection bags)
- 2 36" lengths of plastic tubing
- A tubing adapter (it controls the airflow from the motor into the tubing, which allows you to pump one side only or pump both sides)
- 2 Adapter caps that connect to the tubing and snap on the top of the Horns
- 2 Silicon Diaphragms that act as a barrier between the pump and the milk being pumped (the adapter caps snap onto the diaphragms)
- 4 white valves (the rubbery part that snaps onto the bottom of the horns and drips the milk into the bottle/collection bag)
- 2 plastic bottles with locking caps

My experience
Since I pumped until my daughter was 12 months old, I lugged my Ameda Purely Yours back and forth from work everyday (sometimes I pumped after she slept to ensure I had extra milk for daycare). Rather than lug a Hygienikit back and forth to work everyday, I bought an additional set. One set I kept at work and one set was at home. I eventually bought a third set because one of the horns cracked (which can happen from screwing too tightly day after day).

I consider this a worthwhile investment in my sanity. I was tired enough with working full-time, not sleeping well (my daughter did not sleep more than 4 hours in a row until 10 months), and cleaning and preparing her bottles for daycare. Saving myself 5 minutes every day by not packing up my Hygienikit to bring home and then bring back to work was a small luxury I felt I deserved. Plus, it meant I always had a kit at work and had one less thing to remember to bring in.

I strongly recommend all moms using Ameda pumps to invest in at least 1 additional Hygienikit to supplement the one included with your pump.

I highly recommend this milk collection system. It's very hygienic. It's fast and easy to put together. I just love mine. It couldn't get any better, in my opinion.
